One thing I love about Picturelife is how it bubbles up old pictures that I had forgotten about. Here's one of artist, poet, messenger bag mogul, and all-around-nice-guy Seldon from last year around this time.

A routine eye exam resulted in dilated pupils and blurry vision for a few hours yesterday. I'm quite proud to say I have 20/20 vision, so not being able to see clearly is always an alien sensation for me. As an excercise, I decided to shoot a few images to illustrate how it felt.
I think my biggest takeaway from this exercise was that it forced me to re-focus (bam!) on some of the basics of composition - if you can't really see your subject, you have to pull back and compose the scene based on abstract attributes, like light and dark, color, and where the blobs of light are.
Anyway, it was a fun little exericise, but I'm always glad to return to clarity.
A rare trip to Midtown brought me in the vicinity of Time Square today. Here are some photos of superbowl Boulevard, in anticipation of the Big Game this weekend.

One of the hardest things for me to do is shoot portraits of random strangers on the street. The afternoon light was just too good, though, so I made myself approach these guys and ask if I could shoot. I'm glad I did.

The storm system dubbed Nemo by the Weather Channel begins to make itself felt in Chelsea, NY.
I braved the 20º weather in Prospect Park last weekend, all for the sake of a few photos, because that's how I roll.
The extended period of below-freezing temperatures meant that lake was frozen solid - enough so that a few souls more daring than I ventured out on the ice (that is not how I roll).
This image is far from perfect. The vibrations from car and train traffic on the Manhattan Bridge present a challenge when shooting long exposures. I was using my beloved old Canon G10, which doesn't seem to have the sharpest lens when shooting in low light, and struggles mightily with noise. Plus, there's no clear view of anything from the walkway on the Manhattan Bridge - it's all obscured by a chain link fence on top, and iron gratings below, so getting an unobstructed shot requires poking your lens awkwardly through an opening and bracing your tripod strategically, then waiting for the traffic to die down long enough to get a crisp shot. All that aside, I do like the colors in this shot a whole lot, so technical imperfections aside, I'm sharing it anyway.

I accidentally got myself caught amongst the throngs of fashionistas swarming Broadway during Fashion's Night Out last week. Thankfully, I missed the rioting, but I did feel very pedestrian in my standard Old Navy/Banana Republic that I was probably wearing.
